Spring Cleaning – just in time!
May brings sunshine and blooms a plenty!
Isn’t it wonderful when the clocks change, the evenings are lighter longer and we have more energy and even a feeling of excitement waking up in the morning! Once we have realised the weather has perked up we start to look anew at our surroundings and some of us have tempted the Traditional Spring Clean.
For those of us who are just catching up there is still time to clear out what remains of the winter cobwebs, make space and bring fresh life to our homes, revitalising us for the beautiful summer just around the corner.
Our homes can become stagnant over winter even though we have the shelves and tidied regularly. How do we make the space feel as refreshed and revitalised as we do? At Interior Design Exchange we have been thinking about this and compiled a few ideas to help you cast out the shadows and bring sunshine into your home – and office.
First, pack up all those forgotten winter items cluttering up your home – hopefully we won’t be needing blankets, thick jumpers and woolly hats for a while. Be inventive and use nooks, crannies, and cupboards to store them until winter calls again. Find stylish storage boxes to pack them in and add labels so you can find things easily should the need arise. The physical act of putting things away creates a clear space for your favourite summer treasures and, magically, creates time for special treats too!
Clean surfaces. When was the last time you checked the light switches and the walls around them? Are the curtains slowly collecting dust? Maybe it’s time they had a shake were washed and wafted out. Kitchen cupboards, skirting boards and splash backs – all could probably do with a wipe. While you are on a roll check inside the drawers and cupboards too; you will feel even more satisfied to have cleaned the whole room – inside and out – knowing it will not need to be done again in a hurry just before your guests arrive!
De-clutter! Look around you, how many of those familiar objects do you actually use, appreciate, or even acknowledge on a regular basis? The truth is, if you don’t, you probably don’t need them. How about gifting them via Freecycle or the local charity shop? Or, you could earn some extra cash selling your stuff on eBay or Gumtree. Minimalism is not for everyone but everyone can appreciate a clear space which – we promise – will make way for the new and exciting!
Let the light in! Shiny clean windows are essential to be able to make the most of the glorious sunshine. The early Summer sunshine is showing up the marks left by rain and pollution and it is so much better to look out through lovely clean windows. They really give pleasure, light up the interior and turn the view outside into a jewel box. So much nicer to enjoy looking through them, rather than wishing you had cleaned them earlier. How about changing the curtains too – from thick winter ones to something light and floaty or full of colour?
Layout. Are you happy with the overall layout of your home? Not everyone can swap the functions between rooms, add an extension or a new kitchen but you could try moving the furniture around. As a teenager I used to take everything out of my bedroom at least once every two or three months and put it all back in a new position. I loved my ‘new’ room and was always amazed at how much actually came out and how it magically all packed back in again! Just moving the plants or the ornaments to a new position can give a whole new look without spending a bean!
Greenery! Buy some new plants! Not only do plants help bring the outside in, but it has been scientifically proven that plants help reduce anxiety and stress, and increase comfort levels, especially in work places. NASA has researched into which indoor plants best filter toxic chemicals from the air – essential for a healthy happy home.
No time? If you are reading this blog and thinking: ‘When will I have time to do all this?” Well, just focus your energies on one room, perhaps where you spend the most time. And if you only have time for one thing then please BUY SOME FLOWERS! A vase of fresh flowers doesn’t have to cost much and will cheer you up no end!
